Tour of Michael’s Residential Garden
This backyard garden began four years ago as a buckthorn/prickly ash forest containing large cottonwood trees, overgrown with an impenetrable mat of Virginia creeper, wild grape, and fallen branches.  It is located on a sandy, northwest sloping hill that is shaded in the mornings by the cottonwoods and visited regularly by hungry deer and rabbits that live in adjacent prairies and woodlands.  The understory has been cleared and replaced with forbs and native grasses that are thriving under the conditions.  The area was planted with seed mixes, supplemented occasionally with store-purchased and donated plants.  Planting stages range from 0 to 3 years.  The owners also seek advice on the bottom of the hill, which contains old wooden terraces that seep water into the lawn area near the house throughout the year.
